"Douce France": an unforgettable stay in Occitania for the students of the Alliance Française of Atlanta

In April 2025, the Alliance Française de Toulouse had the pleasure of welcoming a group of enthusiasts from Atlanta for an exceptional linguistic and cultural stay in the heart of the Occitanie region. Between dynamic workshops, guided tours rich in history and gastronomic discoveries, the participants immersed themselves in the French art of living. In this article, two students share their moving and enthusiastic accounts of an immersion experience that was as enriching as it was unique.

"I've just returned from one of the most extraordinary - and undoubtedly the most memorable - trips I've ever taken in Europe: two weeks based in Toulouse to explore the historic areas around this ancient and vibrant city.
The fascinating history and cultural workshops, as well as the excursions organised as part of our trip to Occitanie by the Alliance Française de Toulouse, gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of this magnificent region of France.

Our teacher, Sophie, spoke clearly and at a pace that suited everyone. To prepare us for the sites we were going to visit, Sophie was able to condense an impressive amount of historical detail and link it skilfully to the arts and humanities. She carefully linked the regional histories of Occitanie with the cultural, traditional and gastronomic practices that are still very much alive today. Each of her courses was a real pleasure to follow.
My vocabulary, comprehension and ability to express myself in French have improved considerably thanks to this constant language immersion - whether during the lessons, the visits or in conversation with the other participants.
We were always accompanied by our warm, bubbly and exceptional guide: Astrid. She did a remarkable job organising all the excursions, visits, transport, logistics, accommodation and exquisite meals. We discovered magnificent medieval and Renaissance towns, vineyards, a truffle farm, a goat farm, castles, majestic historic churches, museums and much more. At each site we visited, we were accompanied by French-speaking guides chosen by Astrid for their expertise.
Astrid was always available to help us, answer our questions, explain what we didn't understand and talk about anything that interested us. She put all her heart and love for the Occitanie region into this trip. I consider her to be one of Toulouse's shining stars.
To everyone at the Alliance Française de Toulouse who has worked so hard and for so long to organise this unforgettable experience, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude and admiration. You have created a truly unique programme.

"(...) First of all, I'd like to say that this trip exceeded all my expectations. From the beautifully illustrated brochure that first piqued my interest, to the fantastic guides, exciting excursions, courses, cultural activities and meals - everything was exceptional.
The fact that local people organised the activities and guided the group with their knowledge of local history really made a difference. Astrid was incredible. She was dynamic, funny and passionate about her home region. She had a great knowledge of Toulouse and every guide in the other villages (Cahors, Albi, etc.) was equally knowledgeable.
When I got home and thought back on this wonderful experience, I felt like I'd been living a daydream. I loved everything about it: the wine tours and tastings, the châteaux, the beautiful villages visited, the delicious meals, the cookery course, the goat's cheese farm with picnic, the truffle-finding demonstration, the pastel demonstration - it was all wonderful.
I also really enjoyed the courses on the history, gastronomy and culture of Occitania. The programme was very well designed. We were busy, but there was free time to explore at our own pace - an important point for me. I loved Toulouse, as well as Albi, Cahors, Rocamadour and Carcassonne, which were also outstanding. As a frequent traveller who usually organises all her trips, I could never have planned such a rich trip as I don't know the region well enough.
Another aspect that made this trip so enjoyable was the participants. We had an excellent group of enthusiastic Francophiles, all able to keep up with the pace and the long walks - I didn't hear a single complaint. (...)
I can't wait to discover other regions of France with the Alliance Française!
